Canadas quest to defend gold at Sochi truly begins today with a quarterfinal matchup against Latvia. Listen to the game live on TSN Radio starting at 11:30am et/8:30am pt. And listen to Wayne Gretzky speak, as he joins the TSN Radio panel during the pre-game show. Canada will look for a fast start after three days off. The Latvians promise to play a similarly tight-checking style to Canadas last opponent, Finland, who was able to push their final preliminary round game to overtime before a Drew Doughty goal sealed a 2-1 victory. Doughty leads all Canadians in points with four goals and one assist through three games. He leads all defencemen in points at Sochi and trails just Phil Kessel, Michael Grabner and Alexander Radulov overall. Carey Price once again gets the start in net for Canada after stopping 14 of 15 shots against the Finns. His .943 save percentage is seventh among goalies that have made more than one start at the Olympics. Latvian netminder Edgars Masalskis has posted a .946 mark through three starts and has made more saves than any other Olympic goalie. Coach Mike Babcock once again rearranged his forward lines at practice on Tuesday hoping to ignite his forwards ahead of the playoff round. Pittsburgh Penguins teammates Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz have once again been reunited with Patrice Bergeron on the right side. Meanwhile, Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn has been placed alongside Anaheim Ducks duo Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry to form a menacing power forward trio. Martin St. Louis will dress for todays game after being a healthy scratch against Finland. He replaces Matt Duchene in the lineup and has been held off the score-sheet thus far in the tournament. "The reality is we dress 13 forwards each game," Babcock said. "One guy hardly gets on the ice. Its a hard, hard situation for people that play 22 minutes. Thats the way it is. Youve got to find a way to help out when you get a chance." P.K. Subban is also the odd men out. Dan Hamhuis will be the seventh defenceman, leaving Subban out of the lineup for the third time in four games. He played 11:41 minutes in Canadas 6-0 rout of Austria. "Hes a proud guy. And hes here and he doesnt get to dress," Babcock said of Subban. "Nobody is probably thrilled about that. Those are hard decisions that we make, and in the end theyve got to live it." "That doesnt mean theyve got to like it. But youre here to be a good pro and a good teammate and as its not about me and its not him, its about Canada. As long as we all remember that, were fine." Latvia went 0-3 in Group C in the preliminary round, scoring just five goals combined against the Czech Republic, Sweden and Switzerland. The upstart Latvians are guaranteed their best-ever Olympic finish after surprising Switzerland 3-1 in the qualification playoff round. Lauris Darzins led the way for Latvia, scoring a pair against Switzerland, including the game-winner and the empty-netter that sealed the victory. This is Latvias first ever trip to the Olympic quarter-finals, having been eliminated in the preliminary round in 2006 and losing in overtime to the Czech Republic in the 2010 qualification playoffs. Canada and Latvia have met on only one prior occasion at the Olympics, with the Canadians winning an 11-0 blowout at the 1936 Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Latvias best-ever result against Canada at the mens level came at the 1997 IIHF World Championships where they earned a 3-3 draw. Latvia boasts just one NHL player in Buffalo Sabres forward Zemgus Girgensons. However, a number of their players have NHL experience including Oskars Bartulis, Kaspars Daugavins among others. Their most experienced NHL veteran is captain Sandis Ozolinsh, who played 875 career games between 1992-93 and 2007-08. A seven-time NHL All-Star, Ozolinsh was a Norris Trophy finalist in 1996-97 and won a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 1995-96. "I know Sandis Ozolinsh played for me and helped me get to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final and hes their captain," Babcock said. "Theyre better as a sum than they are as parts." "If you can win ugly, win ugly, it dont matter, its a win," said OShea as the Bombers improved their record to 2-0 to start the season, just one win less than the team managed in all of 2013. "The guys in the locker-room are just feeling it. A win like that just gets them tighter and tighter together and gets us closer to where we need to be. Theres still lots of work to do . . . but they get that." Outside the other dressing room at Investors Group Field, another rookie head coach had less to be happy about. "Were incredibly disappointed to lose," said Rick Campbell. "That was one that was there for the taking. Its a hard league to win in. Youve got to make sure you make enough plays to win the game and they made one more than we did." Veteran quarterback Henry Burris said they failed at many levels. "We were way too inconsistent when it counted," said Burris. "This is a team loss because in every aspect we could have done better." With three first-quarter touchdowns, two from running back Chevon Walker and another from slotback Dobson Collins, Burris and the Redblacks jumped into an early lead. But after that, the Bomber defence pretty well shut them down for most of the game and Winnipegs special teams helped to even things up. Ottawa had two field goals and a single in the last three quarters of football as the Bombers edged closer. Demond Washingtons 96-yard kick return for a third-quarter touchdown was huge for the Bombers, and running back Nic Grigsby had three touchdowns, including the game winner in the fourth quarter. "It was awesome getting that feeling back, being able to be the spark plug for the game and help the team finish with a big win," said Grigsby, who has been out of football for a while after a stint at the B.C. Lions camp in 2012. An injury to Will Ford saw him get the starters spot although his performance in camp also made it a tough decision. Lirim Hajrullahu had three field goals for the Bombers. Quarterback Drew Willy smacked his throwing hand, perhaps on a helmet, but says he will be ready to play in Montreal and at no point did he think of leaving the game. "The third quarter it definitely bothered me but the guys did a good job telling me to keep fighting through it, fighting through the pain," he said. "Obviously our croowd wad behind us and thats tough on any away quarterback.dddddddddddd" The game marked the return of Ottawa to the league it left in 2006 due to money troubles. That, plus Winnipegs win in its season opener, put a few more fans in the seats with a count of 27,553. And they were deafening when the Redblacks had the ball. CFL commissioner Mark Cohon was on hand for the historic occasion. "I think we have a great franchise in the Ottawa Redblacks," said Cohon, who started working to bring Ottawa back into the league shortly after he became commissioner in 2007. "When we did that deal, to where they are today, its a much stronger league and theyre very happy to be part of something that is growing. And I think theyre one of the big reasons why theres a lot of excitement this year around the league." Unlike last week, when Winnipeg opened its season against the Toronto Argonauts, there was no early Bomber scoring drive. Willy went two and out. Instead, Burris took advantage of midfield position on his first possession to set up Ottawas first touchdown on a four-yard run by Walker to make it 7-0. He followed it about two minutes later with a 58-second drive and 26-yard pass to Collins and the Redblacks took a 14-0 lead. Up to that point, the Bomber offence hadnt managed to get out of their half of the field. Willy finally connected with Nick Moore for 51 yards to get in scoring range on a six-play 73-yard drive with about four minutes left in the first. Grigsby carried it the last yard to get the Bombers on the board. But Ottawa wasnt finished and Walker caught an eight-yard pass to make it 21-7 before the quarter ended. The Redblacks stalled in the second with penalties and finished the game with 16 to Winnipegs 12, although both lost 120 yards as a result and OShea said thats an area he wants to see fixed. Winnipeg narrowed the gap with Grigsbys four-yard run for his second touchdown of the night. Hajrullahus 47-yard field goal as the half ended made it 21-17 and he hit with a 16-yarder just over four minutes into the second half to bring the Bombers within one. The Redblacks crept ahead on Mahers single and widened it a little more to 25-20 with his 44-yard field goal just before the third quarter ended. He hit at 19 as well in the fourth to make it 28-20. Washingtons return touchdown again brought the Bombers within two as Willy missed the two-point conversion, but it was left to Grigsby to deliver the final blow and Hajrullahus 37-yard field goal with about 30 seconds sealed the victory.
