TEMPE, Ariz. - Now its rookie Logan Thomas turn to run the Arizona Cardinals offence. When he takes the field Sunday in San Francisco, the fourth-round draft pick from Virginia Tech will be Arizonas fourth starting quarterback this season. Not exactly the recipe for success. But after the offence sputtered with Ryan Lindley at the controls in last weeks debacle against Seattle, coach Bruce Arians decided to give Thomas a chance, for a little while at least.Definitely some excitement, Thomas said. First chance to play out one of my dreams and its a huge honour.Potentially this is not a meaningless game. If St. Louis upsets the Rams in Seattle, the Cardinals would win the NFC West with a victory over the 49ers.Arians says hell be watching that Rams-Seahawks score and make personnel decisions accordingly.Well just see how the games go, Arians said after Wednesdays practice. We want to win the game, though. I want to look at some guys, see how theyre feeling and be smart about it.So there could be a quarterback change in the second half?Yeah, Arians said. I mean everything is based on winning the game and then being smart.Arians said Drew Stantons sprained right knee is getting better and better, but if he suited up Sunday it would be as a backup. Otherwise, Lindley is the only other option.Thomas has appeared in a game once this season, when Stanton went down with a concussion at Denver on Oct. 5 and Carson Palmer already was out with a shoulder injury. He threw eight passes. One was an 81-yard touchdown to Andre Ellington. The other seven fell incomplete. He was sacked twice. The rest of the season hes been running the scout team, pretending to be whoever the quarterback of the next opponent is. He played the role of the 49ers Colin Kaepernick back in Week 3.Yeah, not look like him, just try and play like him, Thomas said. I didnt have any tattoos on or anything like that. I didnt have to paint them on.The Cardinals had no intention of playing Thomas at all in his rookie season. He was a big, strong-armed project, with a need to work on his footwork, accuracy and passing touch. But circumstances required otherwise. When Palmer went down with a season-ending knee injury, the job went to Stanton. Then two games ago, Stanton sprained his knee. Arians decided to go with Lindley — signed off the San Diego practice squad when Palmer was hurt — last week against the tough Seattle defence rather than throw Thomas into the fray. The results werent pretty. The Seahawks rolled on the road 35-6. That left Arizona and Seattle both 11-4, with the Seahawks holding the tiebreaker by virtue of two wins over the Cardinals.Barring any upsets, Arizona will be the No. 5 seed in the NFC and travel to either Carolina or Atlanta. The ever-blunt Arians said Thomas had a shaky start to practice Wednesday, but finished up strong. He wants to see the quarterback control the offence.Knowing why hes throwing the ball, where its going and doing it accurately, Arians said, but the big thing is getting to the right guy through his progression. That was part of the beginning of this practice, then he got better and better.Thomas talked about the difficulties of Arians offence, the hots and sights and then with the reads. But the guys around me have done a great job of making me comfortable, Thomas said. They just say, Hey, go out there and be confident, put it out there and well make plays for you. We have a great corps of receivers, a great offensive line, and the tailbacks are playing well right now. Those guys have picked me up and carried me when Im down. Hopefully, Ill do the same for them.Things cant get a whole lot worse for the offence: Arizona failed to score a touchdown in its last two games.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.organd AP NFL Twitter feed: www.twitter.com/AP_NFLSoccer Jerseys From China .com) - The New York Rangers hope to punch their ticket to the second round when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday for a Game 6 battle at Wells Fargo Center. CLEVELAND -- The Washington Wizards lost Nene to a knee injury, and then won the game with a strong effort on defence. John Wall scored 21 points, Bradley Beal had 17 and the Wizards beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 96-83 on Sunday night. Washington had a 66-63 lead midway through the third quarter when Nene departed with a sprained left knee. The Wizards then held the Cavaliers to 11 fourth-quarter points to return to .500 at 28-28 on the season. They also strengthened their hold on the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference standings. "Were a team right now thats just trying to play the right way and get on a roll," Wall said. Nene had eight points, four rebounds and four assists in 21 minutes. He was coming off one of his best games with the Wizards, when he had a career-high 30 points in Saturdays win over New Orleans, including the game-winning dunk with less than a second left. Coach Randy Wittman said Nene banged knees with Spencer Hawes and will get an MRI on Monday. Luol Deng led Cleveland with 17 points and the injury-riddled Cavaliers lost for the second straight time after winning six in a row. The Cavaliers played without centre Anderson Varejao (sore back) and guards Dion Waiters (hyperextended left knee) and C.J. Miles (sprained left ankle). While the Wizards are in good shape to snag a playoff spot in the weak Eastern Conference, the Cavaliers are five games out of the final post-season slot. Kyrie Irving, who scored 15 points, admitted that hes looking at the standings. "You have no choice but to pay attention to it," he said. "We want to accomplish something, but it starts with every single game. Time is of the essence right now." Washington led 78-72 after three quarters, and then grabbed control in the fourth. Two baskets by Kevin Seraphin, who replaced Nene, and five points by Beal helped the Wizards build a double-digit lead before Trevor Arizas 3-pointer with a little over a minute left made it 96-81. "We felt bad when he got hurt, but during the game, you have to keep focused the whole way, which we did," Seraphin said. The Cavaliers shot 49 per cent in the first half, but were 4 of 19 from the field in the fourth quarter. "The ball just seemed to stick in one area," Cleveland coach Mike Brown said.dddddddddddd "It was almost like we played in an elevator at times. It wasnt crisp like it was in the first half." Ariza scored 15 points and Marcin Gortat had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Hawes, playing his second game since being acquired from Philadelphia on Thursday, had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Cleveland. The Wizards used a 12-0 run midway through the first quarter to go ahead for good. Cleveland got within one point several times in the third quarter but never pulled even. The game featured two of the top young point guards in the league in Irving and Wall. Irving was the MVP of the All-Star game and Wall won the dunk contest. Wall ended the first half with a dunk and two 3-pointers in the final 1:21. He banked in a 30-footer to beat the halftime buzzer, giving Washington a 58-52 lead. Washington scored the first two baskets on a tip-in and a fast break after a bad pass by Irving, leading to a timeout by Brown just 31 seconds into the game. Browns message obviously worked as the Cavaliers took a 13-8 lead, but the Wizards scored the next 12 points to go ahead 20-13. The teams split the season series, with the road team winning all four games. "The last time we played Cleveland, we gave the game away," Ariza said. "They played harder than us the last time. We did our best to prevent that from happening again." Hawes made his home debut late in the first quarter. He had 13 points and seven rebounds in 14 first-half minutes.
