Danny Drinkwater believes there is still time for him to make a late claim for a place in Englands squad for the European Championships. The midfielder was named man of the match at Wembley in what was an impressive international debut against the Netherlands. The match was the last before Roy Hodgson names his final 23-man squad which will travel to France, and despite not having played in any of Englands qualifying games, Drinkwater believes he can still convince the England manager he deserves his place on the plane. Hopefully Ive not done myself any harm, its just about carrying on now until the end of the season, and seeing if I can add to it, he told Sky Sports News HQ after the game. The lads have made it easy for me all week, its an easy team to settle in to.A bit of game time helped me tonight, I was able get on the ball, so its been easy to settle into the squad. I enjoyed it, I saw plenty of the ball, but maybe could have moved it a bit faster. I enjoyed the position. Englands Daniel Drinkwater (left) and Netherlands Vincent Janssen (right) battle for possession Drinkwater admitted the defeat to the Netherlands took the shine off of what was an otherwise special night, as England surrendered a first-half lead to lose 2-1. He was seen complaining to Spanish referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz after the Netherlands scored their winning goal, insisting there was a foul on England defender Phil Jagielka in the build-up.The England players also felt aggrieved after Danny Rose earlier conceded a penalty for handball, although Drinkwater stopped short of criticising the match official. We cant really blame the decisions, theyve cost us two goals but we could have maybe moved the ball at bit faster, created more chances, so its one of those things, Drinkwater said. Personally I enjoyed my debut - it was a big achievement - but overall I was disappointed with the result.Englands goal came courtesy of Drinkwaters Leicester team-mate, Jamie Vardy, whose place in the England squad must now be assured. His name received arguably the loudest cheer when the starting line-up was announced before the game - he is rapidly becoming a cult hero among England supporters - and his performance only served to confirm he is capable of taking his Premier League form onto the international stage. Danny Drinkwater (right) has backed Jamie Vardy to succeed with England Vardys goal was the culmination of a wonderful team move, and if not as spectacular as Saturday nights finish against Germany, it once again showed his predatory instinct in the penalty area. With it, his tally for the season rose to 21 goals for club and country, and making the final England squad for this summers tournament seemingly inevitable.Hes got two in two now, hes more than capable of doing it, Drinkwater said. The more goals he gets the better he is and the more confidence hell get. Hes flying and the more he gets on the ball the better. For Vardy and Drinkwater the focus now turns to the remaining seven Premier League matches, as Leicester City look aim to win title in what promises to be a thrilling climax to the domestic season. Some will say that Martin is too sensitive while others will say that it is part of the way football is in the locker room. But to have to absorb what was said to him for any rational and intelligent person is too much.In the end, it didnt matter that Team Canada could only muster up a half point. What really mattered was that this event came off, that world-class golf came to Halifax and it was embraced by the fans. Mondays RBC Canada Cup was a success in every measurement except perhaps the scoreboard. Under sunny skies and with steamy temperatures, Mike Weir, Graham DeLaet, David Hearn and Adam Hadwin took on Matt Kuchar, Gary Woodland, Trevor Immelman and Manny Villegas at the Ashburn Golf Club. After four nine-hole, singles matches and two alternate-shot matches of the same length, Team World locked up a 5½ to a ½ victory. But never mind that, this wasnt about the score. This was about a fun outing in a part of Canada that doesnt see this kind of golf as often as does say Toronto or Montreal. Its also one of the few times that Canadas best got to team up. Weir, Hearn and DeLaet will see each other out on the PGA Tour but the chance to play together as a team was big for all three. Its the first time in your humble scribes memory that the top Canadian players teamed up on Canadian soil. And while this was an exhibition – DeLaet and Kuchar hit mulligans off the first tee in their singles match – there was still some pride on thee line.dddddddddddd "I still really want to win this," said Weir, with a big smile before teeing off. If nothing else, these guys are competitive to the end. So this was more than a skins game but less than a tournament. It was competitive but friendly, as it should be. And for sponsor RBC, it was a hit. The players teed off in a morning nine-hole pro-am which one bank official called "about the best thing weve done in a long time." The event is part of a week-long celebration of Canadian golf called GOLFest Nova Scotia and includes a Web.com Tour event where Villegas and Hadwin, along with a gaggle of talented Canadians will get down to more serious business. Kuchar took the celebration to heart, taking his family on a Nova Scotia vacation prior to the RBC Canada Cup shootout. He went to Cape Breton and played Cabot Links and visited Fox Harbr for another round. He got a good chuckle from guests at an evening dinner when he announced that his next stop was going to be P.E.I. Kuchar also delighted the crowds at the closing ceremonies when he praised the golf course and the fans, calling it a great, fun exhibition. And thats pretty much what it was – a great, fun exhibition with some marvelous golf. Just about perfect for Canada Day. ' ' '
